Volunteers

If you are interested in volunteering with Pegasus, you can fill out this Volunteer Form.

In 2005 Pegasus was announced as the winner of the National Australia Bank’s Volunteer Awards for the ACT/NT in the Sport and Recreation category. Our volunteer program was again recognised in 2007 when we were the State winner of the small to medium organisation category.

Volunteers need to be between the age of 14 and 80 to work at Pegasus. No previous experience with horses is necessary, however it is advantageous if you want to become a horse leader in riding lessons.

What sort of jobs are available to volunteers?

Pegasus relies on volunteers for many functions within the organisation. Volunteers can:

  • Lead horses or assist riders in classes.
  • Help with the care and grooming of horses.
  • Help with stable management and cleaning tack.
  • Help with farm maintenance tasks.
  • Help with administrative tasks.
  • Help with fundraising and catering.
  • Help in working bees.
  • Become a member of our Management Committee.

What training is provided?

Pegasus provides a comprehensive induction training program to orient you to the organisation and help you become familiar with your role and the policies and procedures at Pegasus. We also provide on-the-job training and regular feedback for volunteers as they gain more experience in their roles. Ad-hoc workshops on specific topics of interest are also offered throughout the year.

Is insurance provided for volunteers?

Pegasus prides itself on its safety record. All volunteers are provided with training, which is important to minimise the risk of injury to riders, horses and volunteers. Our horses are also carefully selected and well trained for their jobs. In the event of an accident occurring, all volunteers are covered by Pegasus’s volunteer insurance. For more information on the insurance cover, please contact our Volunteer Manager.

How often would I be expected to work at Pegasus?

Volunteers can choose a workload that suits their availability. Classes operate Monday to Saturday, but most help is needed in classes during school hours on week days. You can choose what days you volunteer, how regularly and for how long. All that we ask is that you try to be consistent in your commitment and that you notify us with as much advance warning as possible if you are unable to come at any time.

How do I become a volunteer at Pegasus?

Interested volunteers should contact the Pegasus Volunteer Manager to discuss your experience, the types of roles that you might be interested in and what volunteer vacancies we currently have. You will then be invited in to visit Pegasus and see us in operation. This allows you to decide whether you think volunteering at Pegasus would suit you and we can also better assess how we can best use your expertise. We will then ask you to complete a Volunteer Application Form (which includes consenting to abide by Pegasus policies and a police check), and can offer you a volunteer position as soon as one becomes available. As we are regularly in need of new volunteers, you generally don’t have to wait long! Induction training will then be provided along with individualised on-the-job training. Our nationally accredited coaches provide this training for volunteers.
