Volunteer Rights and Responsibilities
Rights:
As a Volunteer Staff Member, there are some things you have the right to expect from Pegasus RDA and its staff. You have the right to:
- A thorough interview;
- An orientation to Pegasus;
- Insurance protection;
- Receive adequate information about what is expected and to understand why you are doing a task and how it fits in with the broader programme;
- Receive thorough training for the tasks you are given;
- Receive ongoing on-the-job training;
- Have free access to copies of all Pegasus policies and Standard Operating Procedures as related to volunteer staff, as well as any other Pegasus documents relating to volunteer staff;
- Be assigned a suitable job and say no to tasks you are unable to or would rather not do;
- Clearly defined lines of responsibility and communication, with sound guidance and direction from someone experienced and well-informed;
- Have your placement changed if it isn’t satisfactory;
- Receive respect and support from other volunteer staff as well as recognition and feedback from paid staff;
- Be treated fairly;
- Not be abused in any way, emotionally, mentally, or physically;
- Be reimbursed for out of pocket expenses, providing that prior approval has been obtained from a member of paid staff;
- Provide feedback, suggestions and recommendations regarding your role and the wider Pegasus programmes;
- Be kept informed about changes to the organisation and volunteer work;
- Be told about client needs that apply to their work;
- Have access to dispute resolution procedures and be supported through such a process;
- Have your personal details kept in a confidential manner;
- Work in a safe and healthy environment;
- Be provided with adequate tools and equipment for each task;
Responsibilities:
To enable Pegasus to deliver effective and efficient services, it in turn asks that its volunteer staff agree to:
- Abide by the Volunteer Staff Personal Conduct Policies;
- Follow all Standard Operating Procedures;
- Read and understand the contents of the Pegasus Volunteer Information Package;;
- Accept that Pegasus may sometimes have to reassign tasks or even ask a person to leave, and that the final decision in such matters rests with the organisation;
- Keep Pegasus informed of changes of address and phone number;
- Ask for support when necessary;
- Respect and support other volunteer staff, treat all others fairly, and not abuse others in any way emotionally, physically or mentally;
- Agree to training necessary for you to be able to carry out your assigned duties;
- Appreciate and respect the confidential nature of information that may be required during the course of your duties (Privacy Act requirements);
- Discuss any grievance or problems with the relevant Coach or staff member or the Volunteer Manager;
- Seek and accept honest feedback on your performance, and learn from this;
- Believe in the work of RDA;
- Serve as a goodwill ambassador for Pegasus and its service in the community at large;
- Agree to work in a safe and healthy way and not jeopardise the health and safety of others;
- Report any injury immediately to the supervising Coach, Volunteer Manager or Director;
- Approach your work with an open mind. If there is a procedure you do not understand or agree with, ask questions. There may be a good reason for it, or it may be time for a change.
