From the Chief Executive Officer
As I alluded to in our last HoofPrint edition, we’ve had plenty of wonderful events in the last few months – either our own Pegasus events or events where Pegasus was the beneficiary.
The first of these beneficiary events was the Rotary Club of Canberra City’s Antiques and Collectables Fair in March. Pegasus Vice President, Gerry Christian, officially opened the two-day event, which netted $5,500 for us. The following month, Belconnen Bowling Club hosted their first ‘Vinyl Night’ and this was quickly followed by the ACT Endurance Riders Association’s ‘Ride for Pegasus’. Read more about these fantastic events later in the newsletter and thanks to all of the individuals and organisations that thought of Pegasus and wanted to support us in this way.
Closer to home, we held our annual Open Day in May and it was a soaring success. Even though the morning began with a fog-filled sky, it didn’t take long for the sun to shine through – bringing the crowds with it. More than 2,500 people joined us and helped raise $16,377 for the Pegasus coffers. Thanks to everyone who joined us on the day and for all those who worked tirelessly to make the day such a success.
In other exciting news, we welcomed respected horse trainer; national coach educator and assessor for RDAA and Pony Club Australia; and accomplished Team Leader of Australian Para Equestrian teams, Sally Francis to Pegasus in April. Over 60 people attended to hear Sally talk about the many varied types of supports on offer for individual riders as part of her ‘Innovative Coaching for Riders of All Abilities’ clinic.
Before we knew it, we were in June! How time flies when you’re having fun. Our second ‘Tack n' Treasure’ sale was held on Saturday, 4 June and more than $2,350 was raised which will go towards purchasing specialised tack and related aids for our program participants. June also means tax time, so our 2016 tax appeal 'therapy in a fun way' – featuring a beautiful story about a gorgeous young girl Emma – has been distributed. Read more about Emma's story later in this newsletter and to see Emma in action on her horse Taverners' Bill, see the video above.
We also had a night out celebrating the achievements, efforts and numerous contributions from our fantastic volunteers at the Volunteer Appreciation Evening. Sixty-five volunteers attended for a night of fun and entertainment, including guest speakers, length of service and award presentations, and food and drink. Many thanks to Eastlake Football Club for supporting this event, and thanks to our volunteers for everything you do for Pegasus. Some of the awards presented on the night went to:
So what’s on the agenda for the next few months? We have the Horses’ Birthday coming up (end of July) and the Yowani Pegasus Charity Golf Day (September). We will also begin preparation for the Annual Report as we look toward our Annual General Meeting in November.
